Dec. 19 11:30 AM – 1 PM Fun Clean Air event in Cleveland

This just in from the National Wildlife Federation’s Clean Air Campaign:

STRONG MERCURY STANDARDS EXPECTED – JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Early next week President Obama is expected to finalize the long awaited Mercury and Air Toxics Standard for power plants which will prevent 17,000 premature deaths and eliminate 90% of mercury emissions! This will be a great environmental and public health victory for everyone in Ohio and across the county.

Coal-fired power plants are the single largest source of mercury pollution, arsenic and acid gases, and account for 25 percent of all toxic metal emissions in the U.S. These pollutants are linked to cancer, heart disease, neurological damage, birth defects, asthma attacks and premature death. Coal-fired power plants are responsible for 99 percent of all mercury emissions from the power sector in the U.S. Mercury pollution poses particular risks to children, affecting their ability to walk, talk, read and write. This will be the first time mercury pollution from power plants will be regulated.

Celebrate this important milestone and let the US EPA know that you support strong protections against mercury pollution!
